If you have a free serial port available on your PC, we recommend its use over a USB port. This is because we implement USB connectivity using a USB-to-serial chip on the instrument, i.e., a physical USB port is used on the PC, but the USB data to Serial by using the software supplied by the USB chip vendor.

Brother drivers allow your Brother printer, label maker, or sewing machine to talk directly with your device. This allows the machinery to understand data sent from a device (such as a picture you want to print or a document you want to scan), and perform the necessary actions.

USB communication is achieved using a USB-to-serial chip built into the instrument, allowing serial communication to occur through the USB port using drivers provided by the chip vendor. It therefore provides no specific advantages over the serial port besides the difference in physical connectivity, and both the instrument and the PC will interact as if connect by a serial connection. The reason we include USB support is that newer computers may not include a serial port, and it may be impractical or impossible to add a serial port card.

However, the supplied third-party USB-serial port drivers may not be perfect. We have tested them on several computers in our office and they all seem to work, but if problems occur, since the Windows drivers are closed-source, we have no way to modify, let alone debug them, and hence we are unable to provide further support beyond the following installation instructions.

Part 1: Driver Installation

To determine what version of Windows your computer is running, right-click on (My) Computer on your desktop or Start Menu, then click Properties; for more information, please consult your Windows system documentation. You may need elevated privileges on your computer to proceed; please consult your system administrator for details.

In Windows Vista and 7, also note whether your system type is 32-bit or 64-bit as shown below.

In 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows Vista, locate and run (double-click) the file named 'CP2101 Windows 7.exe' on your software CD. Follow the on-screen instructions, accepting all default options; this should install files in two locations. Proceed to Part 2 when complete.

In32-bit Windows 7, 32-bit Windows Vista, or Windows XP / 2000 / Me / 98 / NT, use the following procedure. The screenshots below were obtained in Windows XP; certain system prompts may differ in other versions of Windows, but the overall procedure will be the same.

(1) Locate and run (double-click) the file named 'CP2101 Vista and older.exe' on your software CD, which will cause the following dialog box to appear:

Click Unzip to copy files to an extraction directory (default c:cp2101).

(2) Next, connect the instrument to a USB port on your computer and turn the instrument on. Ignore and close any windows that appear automatically.

Step (5). Install from a specific location.

(3) Open Device Manager (right-click on [My] Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu and select Properties; then click Hardware [if applicable] and Device Manager). Find a device marked with a exclamation mark and named 'CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Controller' or something similar, as shown below. (This should be located under the category 'Other devices' or 'Universal Serial Bus controllers'; in Windows 98, the device will be named 'Cygnal USB Composite Device' instead).

(4) Double-click on the 'CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Controller' (or similarly named) device, click on the Driver tab, and click the Update Driver button shown below.

(5) When asked, do not search for software online, then choose 'Install from a list or specific location'.

(6) Have the system search the extraction directory from Step (1) (default c:cp2101) for the driver files to install. Click Finish when prompted.

Repeat Steps (4)-(6) until the 'CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Controller' device no longer shows up with an exclamation mark.

Part 2: Instrument installation

Connect the instrument to your PC (first disconnect if previously connected). Wait for any automatic system installation tasks to complete.

Open Device Manager (right-click on [My] Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu and click Properties; then click Hardware [if applicable] and Device Manager). Double-click on the category 'Ports (COM & LPT)' to display the following information:

In this example, the instrument has been assigned to COM5. This number may vary from computer to computer, or even on the same computer (rarely). Use the System command under the program Setup menu to set the com port number to what is displayed under Device Manager.

This completes instrument installation. Run the Hardware Test command under the Setup menu to confirm that the instrument and computer are communicating properly.

In the future, if you encounter the 'Can not open com port' message when starting the program, please check Device Manager again and see what com port number is currently assigned to the instrument. If the com port number assignment has changed, you need to set the com port number using the System command accordingly. If you do not see the CP2101 device listed in under Ports (COM & LPT), please make sure your instrument is turned on and the USB cable is properly connected.

Technical Notes

Devices
USB communication is achieved using a USB-serial port converter. The instrument software will behave as if this device is connected to a serial port, even though the physical connection is by USB. Thus, you need to use Device Manager as described above to determine what serial port number is assigned to this device.
Silicon Labs' old 32-bit drivers from 2003 (version 4.16) have been thoroughly tested with our instruments and have been found to be very reliable. However, they are incompatible with 64-bit versions of Windows.
Silicon Labs' newer drivers are 64-bit compatible, but unfortunately these newer drivers have been found to be unreliable on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems when using slow baud rates (19.2K and lower). Whether they will work correctly on your computer will depend on your particular hardware. These are closed-source third-party drivers, over which CH Instruments, Inc. has no control. We apologize for any inconvenience and strongly recommend the use of driver version 4.16 on any 32-bit version of Windows, including Windows 7.

ReadMe: Ioline Control Center Version 5 for the Macintosh® requires:

– The Communications ToolBox and the Serial Tool Extension

Serial Tool Extension: This installer will add the Serial Tool Extension to the Extensions Folder in the active System Folder if it does not already exist. It will not replace the Serial Tool Extension if it is already there.

To connect an Ioline plotter to your computer you will need an available serial port or a USB to serial adapter.

USB Users: If you have a newer Macintosh® that does not have a serial port, but instead has USB ports, you will need to purchase a USB to Serial adapter to connect an Ioline plotter to your computer. We have tested our software successfully with the Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter and we recommend you use that device for reliable connectivity.

Description: This driver is written for the DOS version of AutoCAD® 13. However, our plotters will emulate other plotters whose drivers are in the Windows® versions of AutoCAD® 13 and 14. In the plotter configuration menu, you may select Houston Instruments® or HP® plotters, many of which will work as drivers for the Ioline plotters. If your Ioline plotter was manufactured prior to October of 1987, it may not recognize the HP/GL language, in which case it would be best to select one of the Houston Instruments® plotters. There are several Houston Instruments® drivers that you can emulate to use with an Ioline plotter. For example: DMP-52, DMP-56, DMP-62
To install: Self-extracting file. Copy the file to the PC and install.

Generic Windows Drivers

Ioline does not write generic Windows drivers. Most sign-making software includes the necessary drivers to connect an Ioline plotter to your computer. If your design software does not come with its own drivers, there are other ways to send the design to the plotter.

For example many of the sign-making software companies, such as Scanvec-Amiable®, and others, have products that can import files from popular graphic applications such as CorelDRAW!®, FreeHand®, Adobe Illustrator®, and other graphics programs. These products are generally much less expensive than a full sign making software package. Contact the software manufacturers for further information.

Third party HP/GL drivers called Winline Plus and CoCut is used with various Windows® programs and Ioline equipment. For information on these drivers, please contact:
